u1064504@utah.edu's GameLog for This is the Police (PC)

    Wednesday 17 January, 2018

I really liked the game “This is the police”. I’ve never played a point and click game before and this game did not disappoint upon first playing it. The story draws you in just with the intro and keeps you engaged, even after an hour I felt like it had been mere minutes of playing the game. It almost seemed like a choose your own adventure movie. One of the ethical dilemmas that the player faces in the game is to choose whether or not to help an officer by working for the mob, if you don’t help him, as I choose, then his entire family and he is brutally tortured and executed but if you save him it goes against your morals as being a police chief. There are other moral dilemmas such as whether or not to let a crime take place, or you can even kill off your officers if they start asking too many questions. There is such a good narrative in this game and I am excited to play more.

Good work here Will! One particular part of your gamelog that caught my eye was when you wrote “The game makes you choose between two different options in most major decisions but I think the game could be better if it introduced a third option to do nothing.” There are a lot of ethical questions to consider with the third option of doing nothing: would it be irresponsible for the game to give you a “do nothing” option if you couldn’t make that decision if this was a real life situation? Could adding the third “do nothing” option allow the game to make commentary on what the consequences (both positive and negative consequences) of indecision would be? Just some questions to consider.
Additionally, I’d encourage to stay engaged in the game even if the gameplay gets boring over time. With that being said don’t hold back from critiquing a game either there is a lot to gain from thinking about how a game could be improved.
