elnathan's GameLog for Katamari Damacy (PS2)

    Monday 14 January, 2008

    GAMEPLAY:
I found Katamari Damacy to be pretty fun because it had comic humor and interestng gamemplay that I like. I've never seen a game like it before, where you roll a ball around picking up "stuff" for the king of the cosmos. It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but that's what makes it great. You make your ball bigger after picking up stuff and the bigger it gets the bigger objects you can pick up. This way, you can go back and pick up things you couldn't pick up before, and you can end up picking up almost everything in a level! I remember this cow kept knocking me around until I came back a few minutes later twice the size I was before and I picked him and his farmer up!
I also enjoyed the music and aesthetics of the game which are both comical and just plain fun to be around.

    DESIGN:
I think Katamari Damacy is designed very well in all aspects. The graphics are bright and lively, as well the world in which it takes place. This and the hip music help set the mood for a fun and good time people will have when playing the game. The designs and dialogue of people are ridiculous and funny in a good way because they keep the whimsical spirit of the game. And what a whimsical game it is, rolling a ball around picking up stuff.
The game is actually fun to play because you want to see how much stuff you can pick up in a given amount of time, or how long "the king of the cosmos will believe in you." In that time, you start slow picking up little things like thumbtacks and erasers but then build up to bigger things like people, and it's fun and satisfying to make your ball as big as possible, wreaking havoc and collecting everything in sight.
There are a few cutscenes- and none of them are to be taken seriously. In some there is a kid in Japanese animation that hears how the stars in the sky have disappeared, and in others the king of the cosmos is giving you a silly speech and mission. One example of these missions is when you have to remake the constellation cancer, and to do that you have to collect as many crabs as possible and put them in the sky.
There is most always a mission to do because the king of the cosmos destroyed all the stars in the sky and you, his son, are sent to earth to collect stuff and remake them all. I didn't play all the way through Katamari Damacy, but from what I did play, it is a well designed, fun game unlike no other.

Nice gamelog. This is definitely the kind of thing we're looking for. I know it might seem hard, since it's such a simple game, but I'd like to see a little more in your commentary on gameplay. Why do you think the gameplay elements you have mentioned make it a fun game, for example?
