    Jan 14th, 2011 at 17:08:34     -    Batman: Arkham Asylum (360)

Finished playing Batman the other day. It was much more than I had anticipated!

First of all I like to mention the characters and the voice actors. I am very happy they based the characters off of the comics and the animated series. I feel if they had portrayed the recent movies, it would have been very lackluster, and limited the developer's creativeness. I noticed that they used the original voice actors from the animated series for Batman, Harley Quinn, and the Joker. In my opinion Mark Hamill (aka Luke Skywalker) does the best Joker voice acting ever. It really made the game for me.

The combat was well done in my opinion. It was easy to learn and use, but it was hard to master. It was very entertaining to see Chris Redfield Batman (as I like to refer to him as due to his similar steroid physique) annihilated enemies.

The game had a very dark atheistic, which I think was done perfectly, but since it was done on the unreal engine you should expect it to look similar in those aspects. I actually heard from my roommate that the developers were upset, because they found out that a lot of people played the game with detective mode on (created a filter over the game). I was guilty of this, not because I liked it better, but it shows you where enemies and Riddler clues were.

I have two complaints about batman: 1) Why is Batman the only one with crappy dialogue? It is not like his voice actor can't perform, since I know what he is capable of from watching the animated series. It is not a case that they couldn't write good dialogue, for every enemy had good dialogue. So what is the deal!?!

    2) Boss battles... They were the less fun than normal fighting, which is a big no no to me. I was looking forward to fighting Killer Croc the entire game, pondering on what the developers had in store for me. In reality what I had to do was walk in one direction, occasionally run, and occasionally push the right trigger. The Ivy fight was just some rinse and repeat battle, which I hate. The final boss battle seemed rushed, and not in essence with the game. In my opinion, the boss battles could just be taken out completely.

Overall, I loved this game with a passion. Being a batman nerd, I enjoyed the nostalgia when old villains made cameos and such. I am looking forward to the second one. Let us pray it doesn't turn into a Spiderman musical or something.

    Dec 23rd, 2010 at 00:42:13     -    Resonance of Fate (360)

Today shall be the first day I create a game log (outside of class assignments). On the menu today shall be a Japanese RPG by tri-Ace. My expectations from playing previous tri-Ace games leads me to expect a story about a bunch of people who band together to save the planet from pollution or a greater evil, a decent combat system, and awkward dialogue between the characters, which written out sounds like many RPGs. Also if there is any sexual innuendo like in Star Ocean: The Last Hope, which came out a month after by tri-Ace, I believe, I will not be very happy. Now to begin the game and many sentence fragments.

The game opens with a cinematic, where a blonde boy saves a girl who tried to kill herself by jumping off a bridge. Interesting… I have started playing Eternal Sonata a few days ago and that game begins with a female character jumping to her death also. Eternal Sonata was created by tri-Crescendo, which is a different game company made by tri-Ace’s old sound programmer, I believe. Interesting coincidence.

This is one grungy-looking game! I’m having difficulty differentiating planes between the foreground and the background. At least these conveniently placed NPCs have no problem informing me of the entire history of this city. Never mind, they only implied that they knew. Hmmm I have just paused the game to look for a subtitle option, and the only option I see are the resume button and a manual, and the manual has worried me a little with the barrage of information about the battle system. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

“That wasn’t a battle that was an assisted suicide,” states Zephyr, who I have no idea who he is, as my first battle concluded. My first assisted suicide was very confusing and hectic. When I went to the world map, for the first time, I entered into battle. This is the first time I entered battle in a world map screen in a RPG. The ensuing battle initiated with my characters nimbly and acrobatically shooting their enemies to death, while I jammed the A button in an attempt to make myself feel in control of the situation. In all honesty I enjoyed the weird acrobatic gun fighting I saw, but I realized something important after the battle. This is that I do not know who or what I just killed and why I was attack, how use the combat system, where I am, who I am, and where I am supposed to go. All I know at the moment is that there is a suicidal lady who enjoys having her death prolonged by a handsome blonde chap (he doesn’t actually save her, he just continues to plummet with her), while plummeting to their death with no follow up on those strange events. Oh I also know that there is a small NPC child who is curious about cardinals, no not the birds but I got you thinking about them didn't I? Anywaaay, aside from me not being funny, I have decided to partake in some side missions, since I am hopelessly lost. Ah it seems I had to press X in the world map to unlock some hexagonal tiles that make up the world map to travel to other areas.

When you enter dialogue with NPCs in this game they usually say several words, such as “hey listen,” and then their dialogue continues in text. Well what I am trying to say here is that every time I hear someone say, “hey listen,” I experience some serious nostalgia of that little fairy in Zelda Ocarina of Time yelling at me. Looks like I have logged an hour and 44 minutes into this game today probably leaving me with many many days to finish this game, yet I still remain ignorant of what is going on in the game. This concludes my first official game log and my first day on Resonance of Fate. Goodnight to those who have read my entire log!

Oct 26th, 2010 at 20:19:43     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

Super Columbine Massacre RPG! Day 3: Today I start the game with ten minutes of grinding. Seems that I have to kill every person to progress the game. Every now and then Eric and Dylan make snide comments at people’s death. The game shows that they are not effected by killing people, and can easily joke at the loss of life. I have noticed that the most difficult victim to kill, who was not that difficult, was the church boy. This is because he keeps on receiving health when he prays. This might be just the designer’s choice to implement a healing system into a game, but it may also be interpreted as divine intervention of some kind. I have found a Nietzsche book in one of the classrooms. I had to restock at the car twice now, for I shooting people is a lot faster than stabbing them. I tend to just spam the auto button whenever I initiate an attack, for the game doesn’t demand thought out attacks to kill. I have just entered the gym and I ran into a girl who Eric let live. He told her he let her live because he let her, and not because of divine intervention. After killing jocks in the gym there is a flashback showing Eric getting bullied by jocks. It isn’t justification for what Eric did, but it shows the player where they are coming from and what led them to this. Forgot to kill some people in the library. It is time to go through monotonous combat again. Thank god, they finally asked me if I was ready to end it. Oh man… Now I have to watch photos of people grieving. I think the designer made this game to show the mindset of Dylan and Eric. I do not think it is made to advocate what they are doing, or the designer would not add the photographs of the grieving students and parents. Ooookkaaaay, well it looks like the game is continuing in hell. Looks like the demons in hell are the enemies from doom. I know they made mods for Doom, so that is why they are referenced here. I died, which means more monotonous grinding, so I will call it quits.

Oct 25th, 2010 at 23:26:20     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

Day Two of Super Columbine Massacre RPG! I have left off right before we received our weaponry. I am actually really surprised at the amount of weapons they had on them. Looks like all of our bombs have failed to detonate. Ok, I have killed the first person I ran into and the game handles more like an old RPG than I thought it was going to. The slashes and gun blasts are very unrealistic, minimizing the gruesomeness a bit, in my opinion. Upon killing people I am rewarded by the game with experience points, items, and congratulations. After I kill people their bodies remain in a pool of blood, which is one difference from old RPGs that I have played, where bodies typically vanish. I find myself killing everyone for the experience points. It seems my instinct to go up in levels triumphs my compassion for the real events. I think this is because the combat aspect of the game has taken me out of the reality of the events. I keep seeing this as merely a game rather than the events. This is very messed up. I try defending only to see if there is an alternative for killing, but I have to kill this teacher, who cannot fight back. The game kind of took me back to the reality of the situation by showing the broadcast of Clinton addressing the situation. I have gone from feeling bad to terrible, yet I still continue to kill. I have to beat the game, right? Almost all of the victims can do is beg for mercy, which is not an option for me to give. The game also lumps all of the victims into groups, probably as how Dylan and Eric viewed them, not as individuals, but rather, as a whole. The game has become very monotonous. The game is just repetitive grinding now. It seems like people respawn in the hallways, but I am not sure. After almost 40 minutes of grinding, I will call this a day.
