Alien Hominid (PS2)

Status: Finished playing
I started playing this game on Wednesday 19 April, 2006  //  I stopped playing this game on: Monday 8 May, 2006
Current opinion of this game
Old-skool brawler/shooter that is REALLY hard, but way cool.

Finished!

Unfortunately I skipped the final movie by mistake so I have no idea what happens. (this is an indirect way of stating how lame it is that I can't see the cut-scenes without having to replay everything)

On another unfortunate note, I discovered two problems with this game.

1) High scores are meaningless since there are locations where you can effectively sit, shoot, rack-up points and not be in any danger at all. (the beginning of the last level is a great example). Sure, it may take forever, but still.

2) There is a power shot! (keep the fire button pressed...and charge up a super shot.). I never knew this! Why?!? However, it seems rather useless since this is such a frenetic game...I may be wrong about this, however!

Ok, the 2nd point isn't really a problem... I'm just disappointed about not knowing about it earlier.

So, why did I enjoy the game? I guess it's because it's such a refreshing old-skool style of game with updated (fresh) visuals and great audio work. It isn't a stellar game...but it was definitely a fun rush to play! (and my thumbs are sore...)

So close...sooo close.

I made it to the very end of the last-last-last level (I think). (3-5, in case you are wondering). After jumping and ducking and weaving I threw the last grenade I had at the final boss...he croaked. I heard him groan in slow motion... I raised my arms trimuphantly... and then I took a hit. One measly hit.

Game over.

Now I have to try again.

Sigh.

(and yes, I'm now playing on easy....)

Level 3-1 (yay!)

I seem to detect a pattern here...
a) Alien ship gets shot down
b) Cause massive carnage chasing it down
c) Retrieve alien ship
d) Cause massive carnage in space (where no one can hear you scream)
e) Get stupidly shot down/captured
f) Go back to (a)

So, guess what happened at the end of the last level of the second world. (2-6?).

Heh.

I'm now causing massive carnage trying to get into Area-51.

On a related note, I've had to dial down the difficulty level (to medium) in order to get anywhere. I'm pretty sure I'll to go down to easy soon. Some people will want to make fun of me for that.

I rock.

I've made my way to level 2-3.
The switch from "world"(?) 1 to 2 was a lot less significant than I expected. Basically, the whole first world takes place in a US city (NY?) where the baddies are FBI agents who have stolen your characters space ship. Once you finally recover it, you are shot down...but this time by the Soviets!

So, the whole second world takes place in snowy white environments. The rest is pretty much the same. FBI agents are now KGB agents. Not much new there.

This game is still really good though. Finger-blistering-intense kind of good... and I am SO GRATEFUL that you can start from any level you've reached. Otherwise, there would be no way I could get to the end. Hah!

The mini-games are also brilliantly clever. I liked the soviet one: Super Soviet Missle Mastar! A 2600-like game where you guide a rocket until it smashes into a picture of the US. If you do this succesfully you get to see a very soviet message: PWNED!

I really cracked up when I first saw it.

I barely, barely finished level 1-3. As usual the carnage and destruction was extremely high. If you are ever looking for a "modern" game that has great examples of cool and varied boss fights, this would be a great place to start.

Ah... this game is SO not my style. It's:

1) Hard
2) Unforgiving
3) Ultra-violent
4) Uses LOTS of buttons.

However, I still love it....even though I'm not any good at it at all. It must be the awesome combination of art style, sound design and pretty tight gameplay.

So far I've only been able to clear the first level (after multiple continues!). I'm not sure how far I'll be able to make it along the rest of it...though I HAVE learned to (somewhat) use the dodge buttons.. (R1 and L1)

The extras are also brilliant...and now I have a vague feeling of deja vu... Have I written about this game before? Hmm...
