I kind of agree with Penny Arcade that the automatic helper that kicks in if you lose too often in a level is sort of condescending (see here: http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/11/16). On the other hand, I have to admit that it's actually kind of helpful and that I was thankful I could use it on the few occasions I needed to. However, I'm surprised they got rid of it for the "special levels" because they're MUCH harder than the rest of them (generally speaking, of course).

I feel that there are basically two games here, there's the first pass (regular levels, save the princess, woohoo!) for most players and the special levels (the other half of the game, as far as I can tell) that are hard, no extra help, and good luck to you! Some of the powerups are different, and some are actually bad! I don't recall seeing this in any other Mario game, but there's a purple mushroom that's actually poisonous and, contrary to the green 1-Up mushrooms that often slip away, this one actually follows you around! Can you believe that!

Curse you Bowser, you've taken the princess to another castle!

Wow, this is game is just that: wow. The 3D effect is there and it's subtle and quite non-intrusive. It's actually the opposite - it really adds to the experience. Curiously, the best way of describing the game I can think of at the moment is that it's the ideal offspring of Super Mario 64 and a traditional 2D mario game. It doesn't go all "crazy" like the Galaxy games and it's not "open" like Mario64, but it's the better for it.

I'm about to wrap up World 6 (of 8) which seems quite short (in terms of how long I've been playing). I wouldn't presume that it's because I've become really good at Mario games - rather I suspect I'm in for a little surprise when I reach the end of World 8. Is the princess really going to be in another castle? I guess I'll find out soon...
