So we've played a bit more and continue to unlock weapons and things. We've done more than 20 missions so far so I wonder how much longer this will go on! It's been fun, though we've had a hard time figuring out the right difficulty level to play on. We flip back and forth between hard (2nd easiest?) and super hard (3rd easiest of a total of 6 options).

I've also been stubborn in sticking to the same character class. I'm a regular soldier (don't remember the name of the class) while my son plays the flying soldier. It seems like the classes aren't evenly balanced - my son's character is faster, much more mobile and apparently more deadly in combat. There's a special class called the "fencer" which is apparently for advanced players. My son has played with it a bit but doesn't seem to like it - he's a lot slower than the wing diver.

As for enemies? There hasn't been much variation lately. Actually, none at all - though I guess I should include the troop carrier ships?

At this point I'm wondering how much there is left to do in the co-op campaign and it it's worth playing again with a new character class.

The last Earth Defense Force I played was so much (mindless) fun that I picked this one up without thinking about it too much when I spotted it on the used games rack at my local store. Price point was good too ($18).

So far, it's curiously LESS interesting in many ways - the other game felt much more like a B-movie and so far this one seems more serious. On the other hand (been playing co-op with my son), the class differences and weapons seem more fun. I kind of miss the amount of brainless destruction we engaged in (all the buildings came tumbling down, not so much here). I think we'll have to adjust the difficulty level (playing on hard, which is one shy of the hardest) because so far we've only "wiped out" two or three times.

I think the biggest difference so far is that this version doesn't have the xp progression for the characters. Rather, it's focused almost entirely on finding new weapons and getting (minor) armor improvements. These all come from monster drops.

In any case, we'll keep on going just to see how long it is. I think we've played 6-8 missions and I'm not sure how much more there is to go - we've only seen 4 enemy types so far. Where are the giant tripod/striders that were so awe-inspiring from the last game?
