I picked this up the other day because I was looking for something co-op AND because I had to admit to this being a representative of a genre/subgenre I wasn't all that familiar with. I'm not sure what the genre/subgenre is called but I knew it had to do with: brawling + really high body count. I also understand they are quite popular in Japan (and I assume other asian countries as well?). Perhaps, with Hyrule Warriors borrowing from the formula, we'll see greater popularity in the West?

Dynasty Warriors 6 looks like it was a reasonably early PS3 release and it is clearly rather rough around the edges in terms of the visuals and AI. Pop-in is also pretty bad, though I'm not sure if that's on purpose or not? You basically run around a really large environment mowing down opponents until you reach your goal/endpoint. As you run around, enemies pop-in, but also allies - and I'm not quite sure how those work yet. Your character also levels up and you can find items and things to help you out.

The storyline seems historical (not sure how much of it is inspired by real events) and is obviously Chinese. It's kind of interesting to me, though I'll admit that most of it is way over my head and I have trouble understand who all the different characters are! I'm curious if other games in the series are also set in China or if the backstory is something that moves around.

My son and I have played (and completed) only two missions so far - we've failed a few times, sometimes from not understanding what we had to do (an ally died, you lose!), getting to far ahead too soon, or...unexplained circumstances. I think we'll be figuring this out some more as we go along.
