Halo:Combat Evolved (PC)

Status: Stopped playing - Something better came along
I started playing this game on Thursday 15 January, 2004  //  I stopped playing this game on: Friday 7 May, 2004
Current opinion of this game
Definitely looks good and plays pretty nice. However, It never sucked me in to playing. I was never hooked, so Halo lost out to other games.

I feel no desire to go back to this game. I'm not really interested in it, it never sucked me in and I've been playing other games that are just more fun.

The strange thing is that this game is pretty good. In terms of its design it does everything right, maybe its just not right FOR ME, a jaded PC FPS player... on the other hand Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory still has be going back for more...

I played this over the weekend some more. I feel like I'm really trying to like this game and get into it...and now, it seems to be starting to pay off. I played a few missions in a row (basically the whole saving the commander from the alien ship) and I felt more engrossed in what was going on. I like the general sense of battle confusion when there are enemies popping up all over the place and the marines are yelling and shouting stuff. It doesn't feel like MoH Allied Assault (the beach scene) which is definitely more epic/shocking, however it ain't bad. I guess my only real gripe is that the soldiers die off easily in the sense that I never feel for them. When they go down they just stop being there...after battles I have to wander around a bit to see if anyone is missing..and there usually are. In other words, there is no drama to you squadmates getting nailed, they are simply cannon fodder. Sad, eh?

It seems that the problem with playing a game that you've only heard wonderful things about is that it doesn't blow you away (like it should). This is my experience to-date with Halo. It's ok. There's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't suck me in. Arrgh! I wish it did....

Last night I decided to try out Halo on the PC. It's actually been a while since I played an out-of-the-box game on my computer and I'd forgotten some of the travails you are supposed to go through. Once it had finished installing I loaded it up and got a little dialog box that said something like "You videocard GeForce4 MX440 is not supported..blablabla". Yeah, whatever...I clickek ok to continue. Shock! Everything was in a really choppy and ugly looking CGA-video like (yeah, 4 colors...and pixelated to hell). Obviously, my video card wasn't working right. I checked the readme for any known problems and whatnot, nothing. (in fact, my video card was on the list). Oh well, lets update the video drivers. 12MB download and 3 re-starts later I was good to go.

Back to Halo. I liked the intro and how they set the game up, I only played for about 30 minutes so I have only initial impressions. Thus far? I like it, I'm not blown away in any sense, but the game seems to work fine. The checkpoint/autosave is a nuce feature even if the game locks up for a few seconds when it happens.

kudos for original design to Rodrigo Barria
